GENERAL DEFINITIONThis is skilled electrical utility line work. Duties involve installing, maintaining, testing and removing electrical equipment at all voltage levels. Work is supervised by a technical and administrative superior. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out with independence consistent with instructions and existing policies, practices and procedures. Duties involve exposure to the elements and potential danger and on‑call availability. TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative Only)Installs and removes poles; sets up rigging; installs guying pole anchors. Frames poles, installs and removes transformers and replaces pole attachments. Lays pipe, runs wires and installs underground electric service; assures electricity is grounded. Installs, wires and maintains street lights. Troubleshoots any line problems; diagnoses causes, traces source and takes corrective action. Installs and replaces electric wires on a maintenance basis and to upgrade capacity. Sectionalizes lines to limit power disruptions and, as needed, switches circuits. Tests electric load and voltage. Installs, connects, disconnects and removes electric services and equipment. Performs needed inside electrical work. Chips brush, trims trees and collects limbs. Operates and maintains various trucks, with and without attachments; uses meters, hand and power tools; performs manual labor duties. Keeps current on safety training; assure safety precautions are followed in all work performed. Performs related work as required. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESConsiderable knowledge of electricity principles and practices. Considerable knowledge of high voltage electricity occupational hazards and related safety precautions. Considerable knowledge of high voltage electricity tools and materials. Knowledge of the borough electric utility system and facilities. Knowledge of local geography. Skill in the safe operation of tools and equipment in high voltage electric work. Skill in reading and interpreting circuit maps, schematics and technical materials. Ability to locate defects in and to install, repair, connect and modify electric system equipment. Ability to work at heights. Ability to physically and mentally perform all essential job functions. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relations with associates, other borough employees and the general public. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEEducation equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Three years experience as an electric line worker working on utility equipment including pole, rigging and secondary lines work. Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience. LICENSEPossession of a valid Pennsylvania commercial driver's license class B with general knowledge of air brakes endorsement.
