New Stop Sign to Eliminate Old Problem

May 12, 2008

In early 2008, Perkasie Borough sent a request to PennDOT to place stop signs at the corner of Callowhill Street and Main Street.  With limited sight distance on Callowhill and high-speed traffic on Main, the corner has had a history of collisions and near misses.  And to the delight, and surprise, of Perkasie Officials, PennDOT responded by adding the two stop signs quickly.

“The stop signs were put in place immediately,” said Dan Olpere, Borough Manager.  “We were happy that the signs got approved, but we didn’t have time to notify the public in advance of the new stop signs.  Because of this, I think a lot of people who drive through the intersection everyday do not see the new signs.”

PennDOT added temporary flashing lights to the top of the signs and “Stop Ahead” signs before the intersection to increase the visibility of the stop signs.  In the last two weeks, the Perkasie Public Works Department teamed up with the Perkasie Police to add stop bars and paint “STOP” on the pavement before the new signs.

“We hope that the newly painted stop bars and the word ‘STOP’ will make the new signs more visible,” said Chief of Police Joe Gura.  “It will take time for people to get used to the new signs, so we caution all motorists entering the intersection from all four directions to use caution.  Do not assume someone will stop.  Wait for all other traffic to come to a complete stop at the intersection before proceeding.  In the long run, the new signs will make the intersection safer for the community.”
