Kulp Park Improvements
About Kulp Park
Kulp Park is a beloved 11-acre community park located in Perkasie Borough, Bucks County, nestled along the East Branch Perkiomen Creek and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. It’s a hub for recreation and relaxation, featuring a wide range of amenities: basketball courts, a baseball field, tennis and pickleball courts, a pavilion, a wading pool, a playground, restrooms, and access to the East Branch Perkiomen Greenway trail, which connects to neighboring towns like Sellersville and East Rockhill Township.
Thanks to its accessible location and variety of activities, Kulp Park draws visitors of all ages from across the region. Whether walking in from nearby neighborhoods or arriving by car from further away, people come to enjoy sports, trails, and family gatherings in a true community setting.
A Park with History
Kulp Park also holds a special place in Perkasie’s history. The park's grandstands, built during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), are a reminder of the town’s proud baseball heritage. In fact, Perkasie was once a center for manufacturing Major League Baseball equipment. For decades, Kulp Park’s baseball field has hosted youth games, local leagues, and community events—playing an important role in the social and athletic life of the Borough.
Phase 2: Baseball Field Rehabilitation & Park Improvements
While many improvements have already been made to Kulp Park—including the addition of pickleball courts, upgraded tennis courts, and new lighting—the next phase of upgrades focuses on the baseball field and making the park more accessible and safe for all users.
The proposed project includes:
- Rebuilding the baseball field, including replacing the outdated dirt infield and improving drainage so the field is safe and playable after rain.
- Replacing the deteriorated backstop and fencing, and adding protective netting to enhance safety for both players and spectators.
- Installing energy-efficient LED lighting designed specifically for baseball and soccer, to replace outdated and overly bright lights that currently impact nearby homes.
- Adding ADA-accessible parking and walkways to ensure everyone, regardless of mobility, can access the baseball field and dugouts.
- Installing updated signage to acknowledge funding sources from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and PA Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED)
Why These Improvements Are Needed
Community feedback and safety reviews have made it clear: the baseball field needs attention. Drainage issues leave the infield soggy for days after rain, the lighting is outdated and uneven, and essential safety features like fencing and netting are missing or worn down.
Local teams have even considered leaving the park due to these conditions. Without improvements, Kulp Park risks losing its role as a central, historic, and active community sports space.
Upgrading lighting will not only create safer play conditions but will also reduce light pollution for residents living nearby. And by adding ADA-compliant features, the park becomes more welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Project Funding
Over the past three years, Perkasie Borough has been actively working to secure grant funding to make this much-needed project a reality. Thanks to these efforts, the Borough has been awarded significant support from several state programs:
- $200,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) through the Community Conservation Partnerships Program
- $652,886.14 from the PA Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED) through the Local Share Account (LSA) Statewide Program
- $200,000 from DCED’s Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program
This funding is critical to delivering the improvements that will enhance safety, accessibility, and recreational opportunities for everyone who uses Kulp Park.
Looking Ahead
This project is about more than renovating a ballfield—it’s about preserving the legacy of community recreation in Perkasie. It ensures that Kulp Park continues to be a safe, welcoming, and vibrant space for future generations to enjoy, play, and gather.
Construction on this project is due to start late July/early August and completed by the end of Fall 2025.
